Artist's Comments

When I was drawing this, I felt it represented humanity- innocent when born, until succumbed to the way of the world (hence her expression). She's confused, feels isolated and left there to fend for herself. There's always hope (light) and power from up above (again, light) . Should she be distracted and leave the room or just stay in that light that she trusts so much? I don't know.

I question my spiritual strength. What about you?

Longest journey for me in terms of a drawing process. Ups and downs. This drawing helped me conquer my fear of drawing darks and experimenting with mixed media. It's also my first emotive piece.
I managed to find a way to capture the photo of this drawing with minimal glare from the graphite by using lots of dark fabric.

I've been with DA for about a year now, and browsing for longer...and I have to say I've never seen a better portrait. The lighting is great, and the composition of the photo alone must have been snazzy for such a magnificent work...

Honestly, I'm having a hard time believing this is in graphite and coal...

But other than that, you win. Fair and square. Congrats!

Hi! Thanks for your wonderful comments and insight on the drawing. Noone's ever given me compliments like that before!

I actually didn't draw this whole thing from a photo composition. (Wish I could do photography that well! :D ) This drawing was done using two separate photos as ref. One is of my daughter and the other is of her bedroom door. The rest is really just black.

I plan to challenge myself with more conceptual drawings like this in the future, instead of just copying straight from photos like I used to do.

Thanks for the fav and I appreciate the watch! :rose:

Ps- do I call you Frenchie?

You've managed to capture the innocence of the child perfectly. I love the concept behind this piece; it feels as if the child, at a very young age, is already making some very life altering decisions and is aware of the changes that following either path will bring. Not only is it a fantastic concept, but this is really well drawn. My favourite parts are the mouth, eyes, and hair. This is simply fabulous.
