Figure Drawing Class & Drawing Hair...

Fri Jan 18, 2008, 9:35 PM
I'm really excited to start a 4 week course in figure drawing from life. It starts tomorrow...

***

Some tips...

My process for drawing hair for Beyond the Broken Gate:-

The drawing :[link]

1. Get the initial form (shape) and flow of hair

2. Shade the lightest parts, followed by the darks

3. Define the form all over with relatively darker pencil - When the pencils are slightly sharpened, the lines and form will take shape much easier. Use a light hand to shade.

4. Lift highlights with kneaded eraser - After determining where the highlights should go, shape the tip of the eraser into a tiny point and dab the point very lightly onto the area.

5. Refine - Fill in all white gaps within the shaded areas and define the lines where necessary, plus darken the darkest parts to further create more depth.

Thanks for reading!

Dina.

Dina- I'm SO excited for you! I was just telling my husband how you work so hard at learning new techniques in art and you apply everything you learn...and then to read this and see you're taking an art class! FABULOUS!
ps...hubby said Modern Marvels is MAR-VE-LOUS...lol!

Thanks Michelle! I'm so excited I couldn't sleep last night! This morning I woke up, took my shower really early and sanitized my whole kitchen--- and this is SATURDAY!! :D This only happened because I'm all pumped up! I'll let you in on the stuff that I learn. Maybe I'll post some info in the Life Drawing section of AP-- who knows? Depends on what I learn...

lol! My hubby and my son just LOVE the show! Last night they were showing how corn could be used to make plastic products. They were also waiting for Shockwave to come on. It's one of those shows that show explosions, accidents and people in precarious incidents. Most of the people end up living through the ordeal-- that's why I thought it would be okay for my son to watch it. No grisly scenes..

4 week course? Is this going to be every day classes? I'm excited for you! Hope you can share what you learn. ;)

As for your hair drawing tip....do you have any suggestion on how to be more patient? and how not to get lost?

I can FEEL your excitement all the way over here in New York...! Plus it rubbed off a bit...I have a sketchpad ready with one pencil for transportation! :)

I should've mentioned that it is a 4-weekend course... It would be a treat to have a figure drawing course for a total of 4 weeks though...

My first class was about 4 hours. What the instructor taught us I've already found in 2 anatomy books, however, the experience of having the instructor open our eyes as we scrutinize our own drawings-- that's priceless!

I'll try to sum up all of what I've learned and post it after the last class is done, okay??

Patience? Can't help anyone there coz I'm trying to gain patience myself!! I take lots of breaks between my drawing sessions. That also helps me look at the drawings objectively and fix any mistakes...

lol! Good for you! I can't wait to see your sketches!

I thoroughly learned a lot from my first class yesterday. However, to reinforce what I'd learned, I checked out 4 anatomy books from the library today. I want to be ready for what she'd throw at us next Saturday!

The 1st 30 minutes of our 4-hour session, she made us draw 10 2-minute drawings! That was fast and very effective! By the 10th drawing, we were all quite relaxed and had more definite lines on our newsprint papers...

I will compile my notes for all the sessions, then post it here for all to view. Can't wait for my next session!! :D

I see. There are also weekend art courses around here but none of them interest me. I believe I can learn more with online tutorials. But I do want to experience live drawing again.

I remember I fell asleep during one of the nude drawing sessions when I was in college. I was seated in front and I woke up only when the model asked me to hand her the towel!

Well...I was a scholar once...just in one semester..
when I just broke up with my girl friend. :D

As for the art courses...am looking for pastel arts...preferably on portraits..and perhaps still life or nude.
I ended up renting art tutorial DVDs at Smartflix. [link]
Check it out..you may be interested too.
It's only 9.99 for a week and the shiipping is FREE!
